Set up your Usenet news server authentication

The Qwest.net Usenet News Server, news.qwest.net, now allows authenticated connections from any IP address.

For Qwest Broadband™ and dial-in customers with dynamic IP addressess (assigned upon connection): you now need to provide your Qwest.net user name and password for authentication on the news server. This is a change from the past, when you were automatically granted news server access based on your IP address.

This means that Qwest.net customers can enjoy Usenet from school, work, and other locations.

Instructions for news server Authentication follow for:

Netscape Communicator
  1. Go to Netscape Communicator and open Newsgroups.
  2. Your list of newsgroups opens. Select a newsgroup.
  3. The Netscape User Prompt box appears.
  4. Type your user name in the Netscape User Prompt box and click OK.
  5. Type your password in the Password Entry Dialog box and click OK.
  6. Your newsgroup authentication is complete. You can now participate in or set up your newsgroups in Netscape.


Outlook Express

  1. Go to Tools, select Mail & News and select Read News.
    Note: If a 480 Authentication error message displays:
    1. Go to Tools and choose Accounts and then Properties.
    2. Select the Server tab.
  2. In Server name, enter news.qwest.net if it is not already entered.
  3. Check the box This server requires me to log on.
  4. Type your Qwest.net user name in the Account name box.
  5. Type your Qwest.net password in the Password box.
  6. You can check the Remember password if you do not want to enter your password each time.
  7. Click Apply and click OK.
  8. Your newsgroup authentication is complete. You can now participate in or set up your newsgroups in Outlook Express.


Newsgroups in Netscape Messenger (e-mail)

Reading newsgroups can be done from Netscape Messenger, the same way you access your e-mail.

Set your preferences to use the Qwest.net news server:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Select Mail & Newsgroups.
  3. Select Newsgroup Servers.
  4. If news.qwest.net is not listed as your server, select Add... and enter news.qwest.net.
    Note: You do not need to set the Port or the check boxes for the SSL or the Always use name and password. We do not require a secure connection or that you log on, so leave those boxes unchecked.
  5. Click OK .
  6. If this is the only newsgroup listed, it will be your default. If not, you can set this as your default by making sure news.qwest.net is selected and click Set as Default.
  7. Click OK to save the settings and close the Preferences window.

See what newsgroups are available:

  1. Open your e-mail.
  2. Go to File and select Subscribe.
    Note: The first time that you choose this, Netscape will download the names for all 35,000+ newsgroups. Dependent on your access speed, it may take approximately 10 minutes for this to finish.

Find newsgroups you are interested in:

  1. Select the Search tab.
  2. Enter a subject that you are interested in into the Search For: box.
  3. Click Search Now.

For example, when a search for antiques was performed, it returned:

alt.antiques.delaware.joe
rec.antiques
rec.antiques.bottles
rec.antiques.marketplace
rec.antiques.radio+phono

Subscribe to a newsgroup:

  1. Select a newsgroup that interests you, for example  rec.antiques.bottles.
  2. Click Subscribe. (You can subscribe to additional newsgroups following these two steps.)
  3. Click OK when you are finished selecting all the newsgroups you would like to subscribe to.

To unsubscribe from a newsgroup:

  1. Go to File and select Subscribe.
  2. Select the group you wish to unsubscribe from.
  3. Click Unsubscribe. When the check turns into a dot, you know that you have unsubscribed.
  4. Click OK.

Read the newsgroup from your Netscape Messenger window, which is where you may also read your e-mail:

  1. Select the news.qwest.net account.
  2. Scroll down to the name of the newsgroup you subscribed to (rec.antiques.bottles) and choose it.
    Note: If you do not see news.qwest.net or your subscribed newsgroups, select the plus sign.

You can read and post messages just like you read and reply to e-mail:

  1. To send to the newsgroup, click Reply. From the drop-down menu (right-click the mouse), select to Newsgroup Ctrl+R.
  2. To respond to the person, click Reply. From the drop-down menu (right-click the mouse), select to Sender Only.
  3. To respond to both, click Reply to All.

  3. Choosing Newsgroups will give you more information on using newsgroups.


Newsgroups in Microsoft Outlook Express (e-mail)

Reading newsgroups can be done from Outlook Express, the same way you use your e-mail.

Set your preferences to use the Qwest.net news server:

  1. Go to Tools and select Accounts.
  2. Select the News tab.
  3. If news.qwest.net is not listed as your server, select Add -> News...follow the Internet Connection Wizard...
  4. Type the name you want to use when you post a message or send e-mail and click Next.
  5. Type an e-mail address so people can reply to your e-mail message and click Next.
  6. Type news.qwest.net when prompted for your News ( NNTP) Server.
  7. We require that you log on, so check the My news server requires me to log on box and click Next.
  8. Enter your Qwest.net user name and password in the boxes and click Next.
  9. Click Finish to save changes.
  10. If this is the only newsgroup listed, it will be your default. If not, you can set this as your default by making sure news.qwest.net is highlighted and click Set as Default.
  11. Click Close.
  12. Click Yes.
    Note: The first time that you choose this, Outlook Express will download the names for all 35,000+ newsgroups. Dependent on your access speed, it may take approximately 10 minutes for this to finish.
  13. Click OK to close the window.

See what newsgroups are available:

Once you are finished setting your preferences, the news server should appear as a folder in Outlook Express.

  1. Folders:
    - Inbox
    - Outbox
    - Sent Items
    - Deleted Items
    - Drafts
    .
    .
    - news.qwest.net
  2. Click the news.qwest.net.
  3. If you are not already subscribed to any newsgroups, Outlook Express will ask you if you want to see a list of available newsgroups. Click Yes.

Find newsgroups you are interested in:

Once you see the list of newsgroups, you can search for a topic that interests you by typing the subject of interest into the box beneath Display newsgroups which contain near the top of the Newsgroups Subscriptions window.

  • Enter a subject that interests you into the Display newsgroups which contain box.
    Note: Outlook Explorer Version 5.0 will begin searching after typing in your subject.

For example, when a search for antiques was performed, it returned:

alt.antiques.delaware.joe
rec.antiques
rec.antiques.bottles
rec.antiques.marketplace
rec.antiques.radio+phono

Subscribe to a newsgroup:

  1. Select the newsgroup that interests you, for instance, rec.antiques.bottles newsgroup.
  2. Click Subscribe. (You can subscribe to additional newsgroups following these two steps.)
  3. Click OK once you have subscribed to all the newsgroups that interest you.

Read the newsgroup, which is also where you may read your e-mail within Folders.

  1. Using Outlook Express, scroll down to the name of the newsgroup you subscribed to (rec.antiques.bottles) and double-click it.
  2. Using Internet Explorer, go to Tools, select Mail and News, and select Read News. Outlook Express opens.
  3. Scroll down to the name of the newsgroup you subscribed to (rec.antiques.bottles) and double-click it.

You can read and post messages just like you read and reply to e-mail:

  1. To send to the newsgroup , click Reply Group.
  2. To respond to the person , click Reply.

To unsubscribe from a newsgroup:

  1. In Outlook Express, double-click news.qwest.net from your Folders.
  2. Click Newsgroup.
  3. Click Subscribed.
  4. Select the group you wish to unsubscribe from.
  5. Click Unsubscribe.
  6. Click OK.
